Our Vision: To ensure that every child arrives at school well nourished and ready to learn.
Student Nutrition Programs are committed to improving the learning capacity, health and well-being of children by ensuring access to healthy food before, during or after school through school or community-based nutrition programs. In Central West Region, there are 460 active programs providing service to 45,000 children supported by 2,500 active and dedicated volunteers.
The Kitchener-Waterloo YMCA provides leadership to programs within Central West Region by serving as lead agency. Support and direction is provided to community agencies within this service area that includes Halton, Peel, Wellington, Dufferin and Waterloo regions. A recent announcement by the Province of Ontario has helped to strengthen nutrition programs through the provision of funds provided directly to schools to purchase food.
The Province has also provided guidance in developing nutritional guidelines ensuring that programs meet nutritional standards impacting the well-being of all children. The success of the Student Nutrition Program is evident through the feedback received from school Principals and Teachers observing significant improvements in academic performance, social relationships and student behaviour.
The students' themselves provide glowing comments regarding the difference a healthy breakfast or snack makes in their lives. James, an 8 year old recently told us, "When my stomach is full, I learn better and I am happier." |
